Contra-Mestre Pitta

Embodying the Art and Philosophy of Capoeira

Cotra-Mestre Pitta (Pitta) was born and raised in Salvador, Brazil. At the age of 5 he became enchanted with the teachings, music and movements of Capoeira while watching Mestre Bimba (the creator of Capoeira Regional) on television.

Using his entire monthly allowance to pay for classes, he began his training in Regional Capoeira at just 14, under the guidance of Mestre Washington.

In the years that followed, Pitta taught and performed throughout the state of Bahia with professional Afro-Brazilian Dance and Capoeira groups such as “Arte Bahia”, “Joao de Barro”, and “Axe Bahia.”

In 2003 he co-founded the Capoeira group “Bantos Brazil” while continuing to teach and perform extensively in theatres and festivals.

Then in 2005, after 15 years of training and teaching, Pitta received the title of Contra-Mestre.

Contra-Metre Pitta is a member of both The Bahian Capoeira Federation and the Brazilian Capoeira League.

Pitta believes the education gained from Capoeira teaches us how we can respect ourselves, each other and our elders; how we can work in groups and be generous with each other and how we can be better brothers, sisters, sons, daughters, mothers, fathers, friends, husbands and wives.

Contra-mestre Pitta teaches Wed evenings and Saturday mornings.
