About our Yoga Philosophy ...

Planet Earth Yoga Center is a place where everyone is a teacher, everyone a student, and the classroom is the ground under our feet, the sky overhaed and the very air we breathe. Personal growth is a life long process. The idea, as we understand it, is to become more balanced human beings. We all have much to give and much to recieve. Each one of us has a unique point of view, but it is only by learning from one another that can we acheive perspective or "View".

Learning, is finding out what you already know
Doing, is demonstrating that you know it
Teaching, is reminding others that they know it
just as well as you.

We are all learners, doers, teachers.

- Richard Bach

Health, happiness and contentment ...
Are human birthrights. Each person has already been given everything he or she needs to unearth the treasures within. The circumstances of our lives are not a curse. They are a blessing. They are here to guide us. The question is ... Are we listening? Like all great wisdom traditions, Hatha Yoga helps us to go within and discover the wisdom that has been there all along.

Social Responsibility ...
At Planet Earth Yoga Center, we believe that the true measure of our success on this planet is the well being of all living things to which we are intricately connected. The prosperity of one, depends on the health of the other. This is why we say, "Heal Yourself, Heal The Planet" ...
Or as another popular saying goes, "Let there be Peace on Earth and let it begin with me."

This is why we are actively committed to socially responsible business practices that give back to the community in which we live. It is in this spirit that we donate a portion of our proceeds to charitable causes, provide scholarships and affordable classes to the public and host an annual New Year's Day Meditation Fundraiser. Together, with the help of our students, Planet Earth Yoga Center has raised over $10,000 for social causes including: The Seva Foundation, Doctors Without Borders, The Mosaic Multicultural Foundaion and Real Change Magazine.

... And speaking of real change: at Planet Earth, your first class is always free! For our part, we feel that this helps complete the circle, honoring the spirit and generosity of those who have walked before us, and sharing the teachings for the benefit of all people.

Teachings of the Turtle

The logo you see here is the symbol of our center ... And the great thing about symbols is that They tell stories!

Central to this story, is the ancient Sea Turtle who glides through the sacred waters of the world with ease, instinctively making the long journey home to the place of her birth.

The image of the turtle reminds us that we too know how to find our way home ... And that each of us already has everything that we will need for the journey. Like the turtle, all we have to do is slow down, listen and trust our own divine wisdom.

The four limbs of the turtle represent the four directions of the Earth, with the head, symbolizing higher intelligence or what we might call God Consciousness, leading the way. Within the shell are two faces which represent a balance of the healthy masculine and feminine energies. Seen in another light they also symbolize duality or form and emptiness. Combined with the face on the head, the three together make up a wholly trinity, which is found in many religious traditions throughout the world. For the purposes of yoga we might call this trinity The Body, The Breath and The Mind. Finally, running up and down the center of the shell is a design that symbolizes the spine ... And the life force that flows through the human energy system.

We also see that the turtle is pointing upward and that he is breaching the surface of the water, represented by the waves on either side of the outer circle. This suggests hope for humanity ... The ascendant angle of human evolution as we move from lesser to greater states of self conscious awareness.

The Tibetans have a very enlightening story about the precious nature of our human birth. It is said that on the surface of a world covered with water, there swims a great turtle who surfaces only once every thousand years. On top of that watery world floats a single log ... and in that log is a hole just big enough for the head of a turtle to fit through. The turtle returning to the surface represents the rarity of taking human form. But if he comes up and just happens to poke his head through the hole in the log ... That is how rare it is to be introduced to the teachings.

The Tibetans would say, Don't waste an opportunity like that!
